Abstract

Many patients present to their doctor with unexplained episodes of recurrent loss of consciousness. It is important not to confuse the often relatively benign diagnosis of syncope with the more serious diagnosis of epilepsy, which may have long-term therapeutic and social implications. Several rare but important alternative causes of episodic loss of consciousness should not be overlooked.
