Abstract

As an approach to the question of effectiveness, the relationship between service intensity and improvement in general psychological well-being was investigated at a Community Mental Health Center staffed primarily by blacks and serving predominantly a black clientele. The data indicated that those who received more services demonstrated a greater degree of improvement. There was a significant nonlinear component to the relationship, supporting an expectation of diminishing returns. Control for sociodemographic, diagnostic, and treatment experience variables had little impact on the link between service intensity and improvement. The effectiveness of this predominantly black community mental health center appeared comparable to that of other centers reported in the literature.
