Abstract

The one-sided upper confidence limit of the probability of failure Pf = Prob (R≤S) is established for the case when both the strength, R, and stress, S, follow normal distributions. The diagram of the confidence limit is presented for the case of unknown variances as well as for the case of known variances. The results are also applicable to the case when both R and S follow log-normal distributions.
