Abstract

The Bullying Project describes the development and implementation of a service-learning component within a preservice course. The evolution of the work completed by the students in their partnership with the local middle school provides insights into the opportunities that such relationships provide both the college students and the school site. This article identifies the processes used to engage the college students and connect their learning to the development of a survey and interaction with middle school students in advisory sessions. The challenge of meeting expectations within the middle-level course while addressing the needs of the local school is presented through descriptions of student work, reflections, course curriculum, and partnership development. This article provides a vision of how service-learning methodology can serve as a means of providing preservice students with experiential learning that is meaningful and relevant.
