Abstract
|
Soon after my Narrative Matters essay appeared (Sep 2011), many people around the world became aware of the magnitude and seriousness of the problem as a result of the crisis at Pennsylvania State University. Many debated the need to balance the reputation of individuals in positions of authority with the rights of young people who can be vulnerable to inappropriate, even illegal, behavior.
We will never know how many young people would not have been traumatized if prompt and effective action had been taken at Penn State. We do know that the problem of child abuse is serious, widespread, and deserves our attention.
We also know that serious and adverse medical events frequently occur unintentionally, despite the diligent and conscientious efforts of health care professionals. When such crises occur, how an organization responds goes to the heart of its values and its culture. Fortunately, there are many examples of institutions that have acted with courage, compassion, and transparency. Many organizations have developed excellent materials to guide institutions. For example, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement has provided a checklist that helps an institution assess its preparedness, describes the key components of a crisis management plan, and suggests whom to include in crisis preparation and response.
Today, when a crisis occurs, it is essential for health care organizations to act promptly, transparently, and fairly. Each organization should have a thorough crisis management plan in place that has been reviewed and approved by its medical and management leaders and board of trustees.
