Abstract

This is a report on a hospital gang rape of a 16-year-old female patient in Swabi, Pakistan. The patient had been admitted for surgical treatment of renal colic when the tragic incident occurred. The hospital's medical superintendent, deputy medical superintendent, and the staff in charge of the ward were all accused and suspended. The patient, who was from a very poor socioeconomic background, suffered vaginal tears. Hearing the news, elders of the Swabi district denounced the incident by making intensive protests on loudspeakers. Rape cases are increasing in Pakistan¿s hospitals, but most of them go unreported because of the stigma attached to such abuse.
