Abstract

The purpose of this study was to show the trial manual (or handbook) for the helping person who is struggling against the domestic violence and trying to help the suffered (battered) women (victims). In this paper, I classified the helping process of DV (domestic violence) into three stages according to the emergency of the case, the victim's self reliance, and the batterer's readiness for couple counseling, and so on. "The empathic listening" and "the assertive expression to enlighten the victim" were emphasized, because the first step to get out of a DV situation is so important for both of the victim and the helping person. In order for battered women and their loved ones to escape dangerous situation, they need to understand how these relationships develop and perpetuate in a cycle of violence. They need to know the supportive efficacious information including the shelter and the law. So, through the first-stage intervention, the victims need to know what can be done to protect them, who to turn to. The helping person must acquire the knowledge about DV and the skill to make the battered women rebuild their lives in security and safety. As the practical knowledge, I described the cycle of DV, the irrational bias relating to DV, the reason why the battered women tend to stay in the abusive relation, and the training for medical staff coping with DV. Besides the problems of children who have grown in DV situation, I added the decision-making tree of DV treatment. In Japan, until recently, this DV problem was one of the hidden problems like child sexual abuse. But DV is becoming tragically common. I hope that this trial manual would be helpful for the helping person who tend to be exhausted, and for the battered women.
