Abstract

We conducted a survey to assess the level of violence in the family including physical, mental, economic, social, sexual abuse and neglect in Miyazaki Prefecture. Four thousand questionnaires were randomly distributed in four cities in northern and southern Miyazaki. Thirty five point five percent (35.5%,) were returned (1402) and 33.3% eligible questionnaires were used for the analysis. Our survey is the first one that showed that Miyazaki had above-mentioned violence in the family and that the pattern of violence is similar to that in highly urbanized metropolitan areas. It also revealed that victims of violence asked help for their friends or relatives, rather than public social workers, policemen, lawyers or other administrative officials. Based on these findings, we suggest the development of a community safety net for the earlier rescue of victims in the family. This safety net should consist of qualified and easily accessible volunteers in the community as a first line. Public social workers and relevant officials should assist this safety net as the second line. This arrangement could facilitate early rescue and treatment of victims of violence of the family in communities.
