Abstract

In this commentary, the author takes on the recent call for governmental financial support of the beleaguered automobile industries in Europe. The author contends that the benefits purported to arise from funding, in terms of more jobs and the "greening" of the automobile, are not guaranteed. Topics include the role of unions, electric and hybrid vehicles, restructuring of car companies, and controls on the money being handed out. The author concludes that putting money into cars is wasting money; such an investment will only prolong the present misery. Instead, let the auto industry embrace the tenets of letting demand shape the market and let those companies fall that cannot stand. (TRID abstract)
