Abstract

The goal of increasing bicycle ridership often focuses on providing more bicycle facilities without the necessary concerns of bike safety. Most accidents happen when traffic streams cross each other. Crossing movements are usually increased under typical implementations of bicycle facilities. This article aims to point out the biggest safety problems of current bike infrastructure. The alternative proposed is to increase education of bicycle riders in order for them to steer through traffic safely. Experience with classes designed by the League of American Bicyclists has shown that graduates are more comfortable in traffic and are riding safer. Building confidence keeps new riders riding.
