Abstract

This article examines three examples of critical science literacy; that is, writing using technical and scientific information to help achieve radical visions of social justice. The three examples include street medics; that is, medical workers who organize to support demonstrators in protests against corporate globalization, militarization, detention of immigrants, and corporate politics; writings by the sick as they link corporate interest with health care; and human research subjects who have organized to challenge traditional approaches to bioethics. The article explores the differences in the writings of these exemplars but also underscores how in each case, scientific literacy means unwriting and rewriting taken-for-granted assumptions about nature and science.
