Abstract

The 386-bed Memorial Hospital, Colorado Springs, CO, spent more than $1 million on security improvements in 1999--a portion of it as a direct result of two unrelated murders of hospital employees during the year that occurred within three months of each other. In addition, the hospital has requested the services of a workplace violence expert and currently is considering filling the majority of security positions with its own employees rather than with contract officers who predominantly have served the campus previously.
