Dr Ruth-Sahd was a critical care and emergency room nurse for 25 years and serves as a reviewer of manuscripts for DCCN. Kristen Zulkosky, PhD, RN, CCRN, is an assistant professor of nursing at Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where she teaches at the associate and baccalaureate level. Dr Zulkosky has been a critical care nurse for 23 years. Mary E. Fetter, MSN, RN, is an instructor of nursing at Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where she teaches at the associate level. Nurse Fetter worked on a telemetry unit for 3 years and as a cardiothoracic nurse clinician for 9 years.

Abstract

This article describes carbon monoxide poisoning. Using a case study approach, the article covers pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, and complications. A nursing care plan is presented to guide the critical care nurse in the care of patients in this type of condition.
