Abstract

Gary Parkison, a defendant with AIDS-related dementia, was found legally sane by a Contra Costa County jury when he plotted to have his ex-lover killed for $860,000 in insurance money. No testimony was presented showing that the defendant was insane at the time he plotted the murder. A videotape showed the defendant giving $2,500 to an undercover police officer to hire the officer for the murder. The defendant was convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. He is currently refusing all AIDS medications, and is not expected to live longer than 18 months.
