Abstract

Fat embolism syndrome is a potentially serious, life-threatening complication of long bone fractures, blunt trauma, and intramedullary manipulation. The orthopaedic nurse needs to have an understanding of fat embolism syndrome (FES), its pathophysiology, the varied aspects of its clinical presentation, and an understanding of treatment protocols and rationale.
