Abstract

This paper defines the geographical region of Southern Africa and places it in context with other developing countries. There is a brief history of esa, the Ergonomics Society of Southern Africa, and a review of the areas of interest of the members. The problems of developing countries in general, and Southern Africa in particular, are highlighted and the extent to which ergonomists are involved in the problem areas is discussed. In certain areas such as health and industry esa members are making useful contributions, but in others, such as housing and agriculture, they are poorly represented.
