Abstract

Suicide risk for a patient is highest immediately after an attempt. A patient may be treated and stabilized on a medical-surgical unit, where staff may not have the necessary resources and training to maintain patient safety. Care concerns for the suicidal patient are addressed, and recommendations regarding staff training and patient safety are offered.
