Abstract

A review of the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) is presented, focusing on the manufacturing industry and the office environment. Observed or potential negative effects of some trends on the health of workers are discussed, together with the possibility of integrating positive, preventive elements into industrial practices. The need for flexible, rapid and evidence-based preventive approaches is underlined. Strategies to promote new approaches are discussed, with emphasis on participation. Relevance to industryRapid industrial change requires new approaches to control the continuously increasing direct and indirect costs of WMSDs. The most cost-effective way to prevent these disorders is to integrate prevention into industrial practices.
