Abstract

There is mounting evidence that motor learning and control are not a process of accretion but depend on patterning of inhibition in motor neurons. Electromyographic studies in health and disease indicate that the acquisition of skills occurs through selective inhibition of unnecessary muscular activity rather than the activation of additional motor units.
