Abstract

The systemic transformation started in Poland in 1989 necessitated a process of fundamental change in the criminal justice system. These changes included harmonisation with international standards of criminal justice, the removal of repressive legislation enforced during the period of martial law and the so-called 'episodic law' on special criminal liability of 1985, as well as the attempt to democratise and rationalise criminal justice policy.
