Abstract

The authors trace the roots of Japan's drinking culture and show how socioeconomic developments, especially in the cities, have led to increased alcohol consumption and associated problems. Measures taken by both the state and nongovernmental bodies to combat alcohol abuse and rehabilitate alcoholics are outlined.
