Safety 2010 World Injury Conference, London, Abstract:

This is a picture of a road in Abuja, the federal capital city of Nigeria. It is a typical example of the new road being constructed in the city. The design of the billion Naira roads being built in Abuja, Nigeria is a source of concern. Sometimes I wonder if these roads were designed with the driver in mind. The slightest mistake on the roads leads you into the ditch (drains) lining the sides. Many drivers have fallen victim of the roads which need not be so. It is general consensus that roads should be forgiving as this reduces the incidence of road traffic crashes which causes unnecessary waste and loss of lives. The government and contractors need to review the design of these unforgiving roads.
