Abstract

A discussion supporting India's Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1971 is presented. The liberalized legislation allows a woman to obtain an abortion on humanitarian grounds (e.g., pregnancy as a result of rape), on the grounds of grave danger to physical or mental health, and on eugenic grounds. It is emphasized that the new legislation is not intended to encourage abortion as a method of birth control.
