Abstract

This paper presents the discourse of Patrice Vahard, Director of the Amnesty International Regional Office, Kampala, on the impact of armed conflicts on women. Presented at the official opening of the Exchange Programme Institute during December 1996, Vahard stated that women all over the world are falling victims to discrimination and injustice of all kinds, especially the women in situations of armed conflict. Further explanation shows that in situations of armed conflict, women become targets of rape, defilement and other forms of sexual abuses. In view of this, Vahard emphasizes the need to look at the role of women during and after the armed conflict. Included are four women who share their experiences as victims of war in Kosovo, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Rwanda, which shows the plight of all women in situations of armed conflict. Moreover, a discussion of the challenges and recommended strategies addressing the issue is presented.
