Abstract

This is a general overview of the ways in which travel developed, changed, and came to be perceived and Japanese culture. The unique aspects of Japanese ways of thinking are analyzed by looking at subjects such as the origin of the word "tabi" (travel); the origin and history of travel in Japan; left and right-hand drive; changes in modes of transportation; and Japanese road manners -- in particular the problem of alcohol and mortality.
