Abstract

This study explores the frequency of sexual harassment experiences of young Quebec Francophones and examines the link between sexual harassment and other experiences of victimization. The sample consists of 1186 young adults (577 men and 609 women) aged between 20 and 22 years. In an in-home interview, participants completed computerized questionnaires relating to sexual harassment and other forms of victimization experienced. Results show that 78% of women compared to 61% of men report experiencing at least one episode of sexual harassment from a member of the school or work setting. Sexual harassment in the school setting involves for the majority of cases a fellow student. In the work environment, harassment involves for most cases a colleague. Differences in factors linked to sexual harassment experiences by gender are noted. For men, psychological violence in romantic relationships, witnessing interparental violence and having been victim of child sexual abuse contribute to the prediction of sexual harassment. Only a history of child sexual abuse contributes to the prediction of sexual harassment experiences for women. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) (journal abstract)
