Abstract

This article introduces the articles in the Transforming Anthropology series titled Hip-Hop beyond Appropriation. “Rebel Song: Soweto's Black Sunday Movement as Language Antipolitics” by Micah C. Gilmer is the first in this series, with more to come. My introductory essay contextualizes the cultural and social significance of hip-hop while addressing some key issues. Overall, this leads to a wider discussion of hip-hop as a critical area in which race, class, and globalization intersect to produce particular cultural and political realities.
