Abstract

In this study, basic skills that make up Emotional Intelligence as they relate to abuse of one's mate are subjected to review, through compiling and analyzing material gathered from 42 psychological journals from their beginnings unto the present day. The information collected was then classified according to the link found between skills not identified as emotional and two different concepts which are nonetheless used interchangeably—gender violence and domestic violence. Finally, elements common to the different findings were drawn out, as well as conclusions, one of which points to the year 2004 as the most prolific of the last 15 years in publications that associate emotional competencies relating to Emotional Intelligence with both gender violence and domestic violence. The analysis is structured on two categories which correspond to two different concepts as conceived and expressed in Statutory law 1/2004, regarding global measures for protection against gender violence. These concepts—Gender Violence and Domestic Violence—are often used in international literature in similar fashion. The theoretical review has allowed us to identify a broad range of psychological and behavioral symptoms in connection with violence towards one's mate which are associated with several dimensions of Emotional Intelligence.
