Abstract

The fields of psychology and psychiatry have in common with theories of liberation the aim of promoting as fully flourishing a life as possible for individuals. I argue that knowledge and appreciation of feminist theories are vital to good clinical and research practice but also that feminist theories benefit from feminist-informed psychology and psychiatric practices. I identify eight feminist frameworks and set out three prevailing epistemological stances that inform feminist theories. The final section discusses examples of feminist work, both actual and potential, in these mental health fields.
