Abstract

The purpose of this exploratory study is to identify the current practices and barriers related to the use of HIV/AIDS risk assessment measures and the provision of HIV/AIDS prevention services in seven domestic violence shelters in Arizona. Interviewees reported several structural impediments to the integration of risk assessment measures and educational/prevention services related to HIV/AIDS including fiscal constraints, enhanced training of staff, hiring of new staff, discrimination by staff and a need for an interdisciplinary approach. Client factors included the stage of recovery potentially interfering with the risk assessment measure process and the behavioral integration of HIV/AIDS education and preventative information.
