Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the role of abuse as a coercive technique leading to illegal behavior on the part of victims. Two hundred and fifty-one victim-perpetrators were evaluated for types of abuse and their experience relating to fear and participation in illegal activities. Victims report that violent, coercive behaviors and threats on the part of abusers are related to the victims' perpetrating crimes. Threats to harm their children and pets are described by victims as important in their decision to obey the abusers' orders and commit crimes. Past harm to pets, children, and other family members, as well as threats to harm immediately preceding the illegal act, are described as important by the victims who are identified as victim-perpetrators. Other documenting information, such as police reports and hospital records, are utilized in this exploration. Societal and clinical implications are discussed.
