Abstract

In recent years, many studies have focused on Sayyid Qu./CICM_A_398472_O_XML_IMAGES/CICM_A_398472_O_ILM0002.gif b as one of the Islamist thinkers whose writings have most influenced some Muslim militants in various parts of the world. His thought on Islam's compatibility with democracy is controversial. The debate is usually based on understanding his concept of ./CICM_A_398472_O_XML_IMAGES/CICM_A_398472_O_ILM0003.gif ākimiyya, ‘sovereignty’. Contributing to the debate, this article focuses on the militants' understanding of sovereignty in relation to democracy, and Qu./CICM_A_398472_O_XML_IMAGES/CICM_A_398472_O_ILM0004.gif b's response to them.
