Abstract

Delegates to the Pan-African Women's Conference on Culture of Peace and Nonviolence held in Zanzibar, Tanzania, adopted a declaration that they will use locally, nationally and internationally to build a culture of peace on their continent. The Declaration on Women and Culture of Peace in Africa and the supporting document, the Women's Agenda for a Culture of Peace in Africa incorporate the results of the working groups and workshops carried out in the conference. During the conference, delegates emphasized that men and women in positions of authority must be trained to understand gender equity issues. In addition, elected officials should be trained in methods of conflict resolution, especially roles women play in building a culture of peace. Moreover, delegates met in plenary session to hear reports and deliberated in working groups on topics which include impact of violent conflicts in Africa, role of women in peace building, and initiatives for capacity building and networking for a culture of peace. Furthermore, workshops covered issues on security, attitude change, and peace in the context of gender issues.
