Abstract

Every year some 6,000,000 persons are licensed to drive, and annually they join with other licensed river to produce millions of accidents, with more than a million injuries, more than 100,000 permanent disabilities, and some 40,000 deaths. The economic losses are huge, exceeding $5 billion a year. It is unusual to find drivers, in any adult group, who have never been involved in an accident of some sort. No driving test has been developed that perfectly separates "good" drivers form "bad." Good drivers can generally become "bad" when motivated by hurry, worry, sleeplessness, irritation, distraction, illness, or romance. It is common knowledge that some husbands, ordinarily law-abiding drivers, under a temporary change in the anxious dash to a hospital. This article discusses the effects of driver testing and training on the ability of driving skills.
