Abstract

Rhode Island is the smallest and the most densely populated state, but its traffic problems are as perplexing as those in the larger states. The article discusses the traffic engineering division that was set up to solve the state's traffic problems. The division's primary purpose is to supply traffic engineering measures that will safely and expeditiously move motor vehicle traffic throughout Rhode Island. Its contribution to highway planning is to conduct studies and investigations to provide data necessary for planning highway systems to adequately serve highway transportation needs. A preliminary program was also set up to study signs, pavement markings, and signals, with the expectation that this would contribute the most in the shortest period of time.
