Abstract

Undoubtedly, highway transportation has been one of the greatest factors in expanding educational opportunity. Where better schools could not be brought to the pupil, the pupil has been taken to the school. While the advent of pupil transportation has introduced millions of children to the best educational facilities available, it also has subjected them to the hazards of highways and traffic situations. Although the accident injury and fatality rates of school buses are generally favorable when compared to those of other carriers, more determined efforts can reduce these rates even further. This article reviews certain salient features which make for pupil transportation operations characterized by safety, efficiency, and economy, such as equipment standards, preventive maintenance/inspection, the establishment of satisfactory routes and stops, driver selection and education, and other aids to school bus operations.
