Abstract

The history of manual lifting techniques and resulting stresses in components of the human trunk are reviewed. papers by Bradfors and Spurling (1945) and Bartelink (1957) are utilized to develop a new hypothesis respecting the interacting role of the three mechanisms of lifting (spine, muscles, intra-abdominal pressure) to stimulate further research in this field.
