Abstract

In this study, a method is proposed based on ASTM test method F504-77. In this method, loads are applied directly to the ski and moments are measured at the boot top. When the ASTM test method is expanded to include a broad spectrum of loads, the results can be used to generate a "release envelope," a graphical method for displaying the quasi static release characteristics of the binding. Distortions in the uniform shape of this envelope indicate potential binding problems for both safety and retention. A theoretical analysis of one major binding design problem revealed by this graphical display is analyzed. Results of the analysis are compared with laboratory tests. This theoretical analysis suggests modifications in ski boot and binding design that will result in more consistent ski binding performance.
