Abstract

Deriding behavior of approximately 2200 bicyclists was observed and recorded. Riding errors were committed by 32% of the sample, and 3% made more than two errors. The most frequently occurring errors were: failing to signal turns or lane changes, not riding in single-file, failing to look behind me and changing lanes, riding on the wrong side of the roadway, and not having both hands on the handlebars. Certain errors were found to be related to the age and sex of the cyclist. The bicycles observed were very poorly equipped from a safety point of view. In addition, a survey was made of two samples of subjects, who rated the degree of danger of the various riding errors with and without motor vehicles present. Implications of these findings for bicycle safety campaigns were discussed.
