Abstract

This article discusses domestic violence as a social problem in India. India has a high rate of domestic violence against women. The Indian government and other institutions are handicapped by lack of statistical data on the extent of domestic violence. The USAID, India Mission will support the publication of a report on "Patterns and Responses to Violence Against Women in India." The report will identify and document patterns and determinants of domestic violence. It will offer the recommended practices among legal, medical, and governmental and nongovernmental service agencies. The project will initially operate in the states of Maharashtra, Gujurat, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka. The first phase includes the coordination between local research institutions, independent researchers, and related nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The research team will take advice from leading representatives from groups, such as the police, the legal community, the medical community, academicians, and representatives from NGOs. The report will include data, methods, a progress report, and successful strategies. The aim is to provide policy makers, activists, and other institutional personnel with a tool for changing attitudes and behavior in their interventions and advocacy. The project is expected to engage about 30 local institutions in research and advocacy on the issue of violence against women.
