Abstract

Individuals, families, and communities subjected to violence experience mental health needs and mental health problems that are obstacles in their everyday living. The psychiatric-mental health nurse, as an integral part of the health delivery system, has a facilitative role in assisting individuals, families, and communities to mobilize resources in the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of their mental health. The functions of the psychiatric-mental health nurse thus include coordinator of community development, psychotherapist, mental health educator, and monitor of the use of psychotropic medications.
