Abstract

Discusses the mechanisms related to war neuroses. An analysis of the underlying mechanism involves an understanding of the individual as represented by the nervous system, the traumatic incidents associated with warfare, and the reaction of the nervous system to traumata. The particular type of reaction that develops represents the personal reaction of the individual; the reaction type to psychical traumata; any previous personal neurological experience; tendency to processes of dissociation; imitative faculty; and automatic acceptance of suggestibility. Two kinds of traumas commonly causing war neuroses were, sudden acting shock effect, and shock resulting in the emotional sphere. These are possibly caused due to the compromise between the soldier's manifest duty and the pull in the direction of self preservation. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
