Abstract

The approach to the correction of law-breaking behavior by way of causal reconstruction should recognize the need for reconstruction of the entire situation and not merely of the individual himself. It should concern itself with the extent to which laws actually represent the public opinion of all groups at a given time, a problem which has its roots deep in the structure of community organization. By limiting their efforts to the reconstruction of the offender alone, the causal reconstructionists beg the question and expose themselves to the indictment of being biased toward a benevolent form of retaliation.
