Abstract

In confining the discussion to the statistical techniques of Rhine, it is shown that his conclusions do not follow from his data. The formula he used applies to cases of simple sampling only and cannot be used as an adequate estimate of the probability of deviations. Furthermore, he drew his conclusions from favorable instances only. In preliminary trials of mental telepathy, he used a considerable number of subjects, and then dropped those whose data did not show what he estimated to be significant deviations from chance.
