Abstract

An attempt is here made to devise a table to make possible the following generalization for a natural classification of emotional behavior: the emotional behavior of an organism is a phase function of (1) the relative superiority of the organism, (2) the relative favorableness of the stimulus, (3) the relative space conditions between the organism and the stimulus. Emotion is defined as motivated motor behavior of an animal in regard to a sensory stimulus. The table is divided into four points, loci or zones of reaction. The factor of superiority has the two extremes of superiority and inferiority, with a middle degree of competence called superiority-inferiority.
