Abstract

This paper discusses generalized costs as a unique measure for travel resistance, and describes the ways by which aggregated travel forecasts can be obtained either by use of models defined for aggregates or by a two-step procedure containing disaggregate models and aggregation procedures. An entropy-maximizing method is also suggested. A theoretical discussion shows that the valuation of travel time compared to travel costs should a priori neither be constant for different travel purposes nor for different travelers. Empirical results are discussed which are obtained by discriminant logit or probit analysis. These methods of analyses compare choice behavior of travelers in various situations and try to explain choices made by variables describing the relevant alternatives. Models for aggregate travel forecasts are classified and discussed in some detail.
