Abstract

Socio-economic as well as journey characteristics were found to explain commuter mode choice behavior in Dublin. City-wide choices were adequately modeled by the five variables: (a) excess time associated with the bus or train, (b) the walking time of the car mode, (c) the age of the choice commuter, (d) the demands of the home on the car and (e) whether the car is employer owned or not. The coefficients in this model were shown to be reasonably stable over time. A number of important recommendations are made on the methodological approach to modal choice models and planning generally.
