Abstract

This attempt to assess the land-use/traffic generation principle as it can be applied to rural areas in developing countries, also considers what light this principle throws upon the forecasting process. While indicating the need for further research, the study notes that with regard to carrying out land-use traffic generation studies it may be advisable to use direct surveys of vehicle ownership as an alternative sampling frame to the home interview technique. In the transportation planning sense forecasts of either vehicle ownership or employment could be used to estimate future rural trip generation. Forecasts on the direct impact of agricultural change do not appear to have general credibility. Further research is needed in the area of attempting to understand the forces motivating traffic an expenditure approach assessing the way people spend their money as opposed to a production approach-the way in which people earn their money.
