Abstract

The great risk for motorcyclists involved in traffic accidents is mainly based on the conception of the motorcycle and on the fact that the motorcyclist is not protected by either a passenger compartment or a safety belt. Apart from the extremities, the head is the most frequently injured body part. For a long time, the helmet had obviously contributed an important part in the prevention of head injuries. Attempts to prevent damage to the skull are documented in the various helmet designs. Tests are done to obtain the biomechanical standard values of the different helmets. Within the framework of this paper it can not be defined which helmet materials offer the best protection. It seems essential to pursue the link of the medical/technical accident analysis and experimental tests. Correlating connections between mechanical evaluations and resulting injury sequences can only be defined by this method. (TRRL)
