Abstract

A real world child pedestrian accident was reconstructed using the multi-body system (MBS) model, facet model, and FEM model respectively to investigate the head impact biomechanics and injury mechanism during the accident. Child headform impact tests were carried out to acquire the mechanical properties of the vehicle front at the head and hip impact locations in the accident. The overall kinematics of pedestrian and head impact conditions in each reconstruction are quite similar and close to those values in the accident. The calculated head injury parameters are on the same level and correspond well to the injury outcomes in the accident. Nevertheless, minor variations of these values still exist due to different numerical methods.
